A love letter to the lunches you still think about.
This large-scale original brings together layers of menus, handwritten notes and ephemera collected from some of our favourite London long-lunch institutions — including St John, Sweetings, Wiltons, The Wolseley, Quo Vadis, Arlington, Andrew Edmunds, Oslo Court and many more.
Each piece is torn, layered and worked directly into the canvas before being partially buried beneath washes and expressive layers of soft pink, chalky white and pale blue acrylic. Restaurant names, fragments of menus and traces of past lunches appear and disappear throughout the surface.
Across the collage sits the simple invitation LONG LUNCH? — a question that rarely needs much persuading. Along with “One More?” and “Only dull people are brilliant at breakfast”.
Painted, scraped and layered entirely by hand, the work rewards looking closely; new fragments, names and marks reveal themselves across the canvas.
